Acupuncture is the use of hair fine needles that are inserted into the skin at specific locations in the body to stimulate changes in the nervous system, release endorphins, promote oxygen and blood flow and bring the body back into homeostasis. Acupuncture is able to combat stress, relieve various ailments, treat injuries, and support the immune system to fight invasions that may attack the body.
During the insertion of fine needles in certain points, patients will often feel nothing, on occasion there will be a light pinch, less painful than plucking an eyebrow hair, and a subsequent dull, heavy, achy, warm, or tingling sensation. Patients have said to have felt the sensation move to another area of the body as well. This is a good thing. These sensations are all common and often welcomed responses to acupuncture stimulation.
Safety precautions are taken very seriously and we ensure that all needles are packaged, single use only acupuncture needles. All used needles are disposed of in a labeled biohazard container and shipped to a disposal company when the container is full. During needling, all major organs, blood vessels, and nerves are considered carefully. As an acupuncturist, training in Clean Needle Technique is required to be able to begin practicing. We take your health and safety seriously.
Your first appointment will be your 90-minute initial exam. In this session you will sit with your practitioner and discuss your goals of care. Curious about what Microneedling does? Check out this video!
Microneedling is the insertion of very fine (almost hair like) short filaments into the skin with a pen like device that oscillates at the tip stimulating a healing reaction that induces cell turnover, serum infusion, and provoke the healing process for the purpose of rejuvenation. The premise is simple: promote collagen production and new skin cells to bring that youthful and healthy appearance back to your face. Results may vary and a minimum of 8 consistent treatments is recommended.
Microneedling is used to improve conditions such as acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, loose skin, even out skin texture, reduce pore size, treat brown spots, stretch marks, and pigment issues. The use of microneedling with serums produces a 3000% higher product absorption! Microneedling can also be used on the scalp to promote hair growth and certain scars such as stretch marks to reduce their intensity.
At your first appointment, you will arrive with all your paperwork completed and talk with your practitioner to discuss your goals and areas of focus. Your practitioner will begin your treatment by applying lidocaine numbing cream to your face for 20 minutes. During this time you will also get a mini acupuncture treatment to prime your body and reinforce the microneedling session. Once the numbing cream has set, it will be removed and the process of microneedling will begin. Your practitioner will apply hyaluronic acid and/or specialized serums to the areas being treated and with the Acumicro pen begin the procedure of stimulating collagen production. After microneedling has been completed, you will receive a mini facial massage with aloe and instructions on your aftercare. Following the aftercare is incredibly important for quality results. Appointments typically last 40-60 minutes.
For best results microneedling is administered once a month for up to 8 months. Nano needling can be done every 7-10 days. Many patients have seen results faster than that though results are not guaranteed. After you have reached your desired results, you will transition to maintenance appointments which you will discuss with your practitioner. For quickest results a combination of microneedling, nano needling, cosmetic acupuncture, and herbal medicine are applied.
To minimize pain and discomfort a numbing cream is applied to the area being treated. Bony and delicate areas such as the forehead, chin, around the eyes, and neck will be more sensitive than others. Most patients say it’s uncomfortable but bearable and many don’t find any discomfort at all. If the discomfort is too painful, speak with your practitioner to determine an alternate method of care.
Safety precautions are of the utmost importance. Microneedling is not for everyone. If you are experiencing any of the following conditions, it is advised to reschedule your appointment or avoid microneedling all together:
- Active acne
- Local infections such as warts
- Moderate to severe chronic skin disease such as eczema and psoriasis
- Blood dyscrasias, patients on anticoagulant therapy
- Extreme keloidal tendency
- Patients on chemo/radiotherapy
- Herpes zoster
- Blood thinners and anticoagulants
- Autoimmune conditions
For those using other cosmetic procedures such as botox, it is advisable to wait at least 7-14 days from the time you received botox. Microneedling too close to botox and filler injections will diminish the effects of and shorten its duration.
Found naturally in the skin, hyaluronic acid holds water and keeps the skin hydrated and plump. As we age we stop producing as much collagen which causes our skin to lose its sheen and start to sag. Hyaluronic acid will absorb into the skin and keep it plump and moisturized.
